Schooling in the Philippines is different to in the UK.
Secondary education lasts for four years – Freshman, Sophomore, Junior & Senior. Morong National High School has 3,736 students split fairly equally between the four year groups. There are 76 teaching staff (including the Principal and her senior staff). I have no idea what the teacher:pupil ratio is in the UK, but I guess it is better than the 1:49 at Morong National High! We are told that class size is around 80 students. The school was founded in 1997 and provides free public secondary education (only around 20% of secondary education is publicly funded, so the youngsters in Morong are very fortunate). Secondary education is NOT compulsary, and only around two thirds of children attend secondary education. The school is on a site of 12,428 square meters in central Morong but is is quite crowded, as it was designed to accommodate 2,435 students within the ten classrooms. The only way to cope with the number of students in the limited classroom facilities is by schooling in two 'shifts', hence classes run from 07:00 until 19:00 five days per week. Teaching staff (as in the UK) keep longer hours than this.
